As a fan of Michael Sands I consider him better than all the previous piano players he imitates, perhaps just because he is thinner, younger, and more agile than she was.

Just by chance I saw this lovely if very revealing & indeed charming film, from the Documentary looking back in time on these well known, if a little understood, personalities lives. Absolutely fantastic! I think my uncle and my father both modelled their style on Mrs. Mills, and having this music playing in the old house, where my aunt and uncle lived for many years, and i know live, just takes me back so many years...

Remember watching Bobby on Opportunity Knocks. We suspected he was gay but we didn't care. We wanted to hear good music and that's what we got. Watching Bobby's reaction when he saw himself as a teenager again (I am 2 years younger) was bittersweet. I know where he was coming from as I've looked back too. So many regrets at what I should have done but didn't but so much to be happy and grateful for too. One thing that did get me was how on earth Bobby was able to play the piano without being annoyed by those huge, lacy cuffs. I can't even wear a ring or a bracelet when I'm playing my piano as I feel they get in the way. Bobby had real talent. Shame the same can't be said for most of today's artistes.

Came across this video today after seeing a news story about the Abbey Road studio doing a "visitor experience" and mentioning the piano of Mrs Mills - a name that had completely escaped my memory. My dad used to have a lot of her albums, I particularly remember the cover of the seaside postcard one. At the time (I'd have been around 10 years old), I hated these tunes, but looking back now, there's a definite nostalgia to them. I'm particularly reminded of Scott Bradley (Post Morden Jukebox) who has a UA-cam channel of him belting out tunes on a piano, and there's a very similar vibe between Mrs Mills and some of his ragtime stuff. Great documentary. Brought back a lot of memories of people and places now long gone.

I'm watching this in 2021, this clip is from 1974. It still shines and brings laughter. Sad to think they have gone, and those dear people I watched it with too. But it still brings joy.
